Daily Gratitude Journal

I teach school all day - and I spend lots of time with kids who don't like being there!! It is such a conundrum for me - probably because I always loved school!

I am flabbergasted at kids - and even many of the other teachers there - who say they hate reading!! I can't even remember not being able to read let alone not loving it.

So I'm grateful for school and reading - and for the joy they bring into my life!!

(I don't want to hear about it if you don't like school - or if you don't like to read!!)

I am grateful for both of those things too! What a shame for those who've never known the pure joy of escaping into the world of a book.

BTW - this picture is so Phoebe.

I think I liked school pretty well.

I love reading. Which is sometimes a curse to me, calling me away from things I should be doing. A curse I'm willing to live with!

Maybe I've quoted this before, but I usually came home to my mom reading on the couch- the younger ones were napping and the rest of us were in school - and the laundry that needed folding was waiting there for us to fold it!! It was a model I have tried to emulate. My mom always said, "Never do anything when your kids are asleep that you can do when they are awake." It's advice I follow!

I envy people who like to read. I am dyslexic, so when I read it is a lot of work, or a chore. I do love to learn. As I get older, I am grateful that I have been able to figure out how to work around this challenge. I like to read magazines and short articles. I like to listen to talk radio. I also like to listen to different programs on the Mormon Channel that can be found at: radio.lds.org. I was so happy to recently discover an auditory website for the Children’s Friend. It can be found at:

I love to listen to General Conference on CD’s. When I play the piano for my primary calling, I figured out that I can play simplified versions of the songs and the kids don’t know the difference. The computer helps me a lot with organizing my thoughts onto a document and with spell check.

The best thing I have done is to follow the counsel of our prophet and read the scriptures every day. It has been a blessing in my life to do that....a lot of work, but a blessing, nonetheless.

I think it's important to note that there are good reasons for people not to enjoy reading!! I try to get my students into audio books - and if a student will truly look at the words while listening to it being read, their reading ability improves tremendously. My husband's brother was dyslexic too, and he struggled mightily. When audio books finally came into popularity, he had one in his car radio at all times - the scriptures, conference talks, novel, history books - and he was able to retain most of it. The extra piece of reading it along with the tape is not very useful in a car!! (I get lost listening to books - I have to physically read them. Apparently I'm a true visual learner!)

Congrats to you for working with your disability - I should have you come give a pep talk to my students - who usually just give up and play video games!!
